Self Directed IRA Plans

To invest IRA funds in real estate, jump to the 2nd topic below.

Self Directed, Traditional and Roth IRA Accounts. IRA plan or account funds can either be invested directly by the custodian of the account, or the investments can be self directed by you. This is the case with either traditional IRAs or Roth IRAs. Most or many IRA custodians put your retirement savings into some investment which the custodian sells. With self directed accounts, as the name implies, you make the investment choices, usually from a very wide range of investment selections. With the self directed account the custodian is simply an independent administrator, handling the investment transactions which you dictate, and doing the IRS tax reporting for the account.

AE-Trust offers both Roth and traditional IRA accounts, but only the self directed type. That is, we do not sell you our investment choice, we are not even licensed to sell investments. We can invest your money in a wide range of mutual funds, stocks, bonds, etc., in your behalf, but you or your investment advisor make all the buy and sell decisions. We only engage in investments, transactions and sell orders which you or your investment advisor dictate to us. For a large number of people the self directed approach makes the most sense, because you aren't locked into the narrow choices and/or self serving interests of a custodian.

Real Estate and Other Non-Traditional Investment Choices For Your IRA. In the last few years a large number of IRA account owners have begun moving their IRA money into either real estate, business enterprises which they wanted to start up or into other non-traditional IRA investments. A lot of these people feel that the traditional choices, which are securities such as mutual funds, stocks and bonds, are simply too risky and too difficult to understand and deal with. Fortunately for those who like these non-securities options, such as real estate, this is both quite legal and, under AE-Trust, quite easy to do and manage. This applies to both Roth and traditional IRAs.

There are some serious drawbacks in putting your IRA money into non-traditional investments, IF you do it directly from your IRA account. For these types of investments to be both safe and easy you must add a self managed limited liability company (LLC) to a self directed IRA account. All the IRA's funds become invested in, transferred to, the LLC. In the LLC, the IRA owner (you) fully control the checkbook and the investments, all still tax deferred through the parent IRA account at AE-Trust. This concept is referred to as an IRA-LLCSM or ICOSM.
